Call for Volunteers for WAAL 2010 Conference

If you plan to attend “WAAL 2010: Something’s Brewing in Milwaukee” (April 20-23), please consider volunteering.

Volunteers are needed to play the following roles:

1) Assist at the Registration Desk with on-site registration and pick-up of conference materials.

2) The Introducer/Room Monitors introduce the speaker(s) or panelists for a program of their choice and also serve as that room’s monitor (assessing room conditions and media, counting attendees, and assisting speaker(s) with distribution of materials).

Become an ALSO Officer!

ALSO is looking for nominations and volunteers to run for available positions of Junior Executive Officer’s in our upcoming elections.

Please feel free to nominate yourself or a fellow SLIS student who you think has promising leadership potential and has interest in the field of academic librarianship. Nominations close Friday, February 12th at 5pm. Nominated candidates will then be notified and elections will be held the week of February 15th, 2010.
Junior Executive Officers will spend the Spring learning how to lead ALSO from the current ALSO Executive Officers and assume the positions of Co-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer for the 2010-11 academic year in May 2010, after the current officers graduate.

Need Volunteer for RSS Feed Demo

ALSO is looking for a volunteer to demonstrate at our next meeting (mid-March) how to set up and best utilize an RSS Feed to search for library job advertisements. If you are familiar with this type of technology and would like to volunteer to give a brief presentation as part of a larger job hunting career event sponsered by ALSO but available to all of SLIS, please let us know. This would be an excellent experience and resume builder to anyone who’s interested!

We are also looking for suggestions for quality job list-serves and websites so we can compile a list to distribute at the meeting, so you have a few favorites, please pass them our way.

A panel of directors and experienced professionals from archives and academic, public, school, and special libraries will provide career advice. Small discussion groups follow the panel. Panelists include:

The WAAL Conference Planning Committee has extended the deadline for accepting poster session proposals until January 29th for:

April 20-23, 2010

Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, Milwaukee, WI

The poster sessions are scheduled for Thursday, April 22nd, 3:30-5:00pm.

To submit a poster session proposal, please forward the following information to Charles.elftmann@alverno.edu :

1. Abstract of the poster content (150 words or less). This will appear in the conference program.

2. Presenter name(s), institutional affiliation(s), and contact information.

3. Type of equipment you will be bringing.

All poster presenters will be given skirted table space. No other equipment will be provided. If you chose to bring your own laptop, wireless Internet access will be available.

Invitation to UW Reference Retreat

You are cordially invited to attend the January 2010 Reference Retreat on Tuesday, January 12th at the Health Sciences Learning Center. We are looking forward to another full day of reference-related fun! Check out the complete agenda here: http://projects.hsl.wisc.edu/ref_retreat/agenda.pdf

You may register for the retreat at http://projects.hsl.wisc.edu/ref_retreat/ until Friday, January 8th. Although pre-registration is preferred, on-site registration will also be available. The retreat will run from 8:45 am to 4:30pm. You may register for the full day or just the morning or afternoon sessions.

Bagels, coffee and juice will be provided in the morning. Please plan to bring your own lunch and other snacks and beverages. A Union Deli is located right outside of the auditorium. Let us know if you have suggestions for lunch table discussion topics through the registration form.

Deadline Extended: Graduate Student Position in Information Literacy Instruction

Hey ALSO Members! I held the following position all Summer and Fall Semester this year and LOVED it! It’s an amazing opportunity to learn more about library instruction, committee work, the common book program, and general administration. The only reason I left was to persue a TA position otherwise I never would have given this job up! It pays well and the supervisors, Sarah and Sheila are great to work for. The Campus Library & Information Literacy Instruction (LILI) Program Office is looking for a Graduate Student to assist with the following projects:

Campus Common Book (a.k.a. “Go Big Read”):

• Schedule, organize, and attend meetings about programming. Additionally, manage notes and tasks from these meetings.

• Develop planning documents in consultation with librarians in the LILI Office.

• Manage email communications with the public regarding the program.

• Manage inventory of books in stock and to be distributed.

• Write weekly entries for the program blog.

• Conduct research to provide an environmental scan of best practices at peer institutions.

Administrative Support:

• Assist in providing instructional statistical analysis for Library Instruction administration campus-wide.

• Edit and create several public instruction Web pages using HTML, CSS, and Dreamweaver.

• Create, organize, and prepare marketing materials for courses, libraries, workshops, etc. in both print and electronic formats.

Other:

• Provide support for campus coordinators for special projects as assigned. Projects of personal and/or professional interest are also available.

Hours: 10-20 hours per week

Wage: $11 per hour

Bring your lunch and Join ALSO on Wednesday Nov. 11th from 11:45-12:45 in the SLIS Commons for a lunch time discussion about Collection Development.

Joining us for the discussion will be

Pamela O’Donnell, reference and collection development librarian at College Library
Julianne Haahr, Western European History & Social Sciences Librarian at Memorial Library

These campus librarians will share a little about their career paths and their primary duties now. They will also entertain any questions you may have.
